What is Cool Roofing? - Pomona Roofing Products

Cool roofing and energy efficiency are hot topics. California leads the country in energy focused building codes, which provide the best user experience and the lowest energy costs. Title 24, Chapter 6 regulations specify the roofing types that are approved for new construction. One major innovation is the introduction of cool roofing. A "cool" roof reflects sunlight and doesn’t retain as much heat as a conventional roof. Cool roofing is becoming a popular way keep a home comfortable while reducing energy costs. Heat and energy costs are both major concerns in the Pomona Valley area, so cool roofs are especially important.  We at Royal Roof Company can answer your questions and help with your cool roofing needs in Pomona Valley, Ontario, and surrounding areas. How does it work?

The primary way cool roofs stay cool is by reflecting more sunlight than traditional roofs. Flat or sloped commercial roofing requirese reflective coatings and the application of reflective membranes. Steep-slope roofs, like most residential roofs, can utilize various shingle, tile, and metal roofing options which contain granules or pigments that reflect infrared sunlight.

Cool roofs release absorbed heat back into the air, rather than into the interior of a building. Using materials that release heat quickly reduces the average temperature of the roof, which reduces the amount of heat the building will absorb from the roof.

Together, these two factors work to keep a building's interior from heating up even in direct sunlight. During peak summer hours, a cool roof can remain 50–60°F (28–33°C) cooler than conventional roofing products.

Why use a cool roof?

Cool roofs have a number of benefits. Cool roofing can help in the following ways:

  • Save on Energy Costs:  Cool roofs can save you money. Absorbing less heat means that your air conditioning doesn’t have to work as hard to keep your home or office cool. This is especially important in areas with high energy costs, such as the Pomona Valley. One California study found that the yearly net savings for a commercial cool roof is around $.50 per square foot.

  • Reduce Pollution:  Not only will needing less air conditioning save you money, you’ll also be doing your part for cleaner air. Less air conditioning means using less energy overall.

  • Be Healthier and More Comfortable:  The effects of a cool roof on a building without air conditioning can be dramatic. Not only will these buildings be more comfortable, they’ll also help keep down instances of heat exhaustion or other heat-related problems.

  • Increase the Life Expectancy of your Roof:  Heat is one of the most damaging things for your roof. By reducing the amount of heat your roof has to endure, you’re extending the potential life of your shingles.

How does Title 24 affect my roofing options in California?

As of August 2009, any new roofs or re-roofs need to meet the Title 24, Part 6 regulations for energy efficiency. All residential and commercial steep-slope roofs must follow these regulations. Installing a cool roof is an easy way to meet these requirements. Royal Roofing Company offers cool roofing shingle, tile, and metal roofing products in a variety of colors and styles.
