What is Cool Roofing?

Cool roofing and energy efficiency is a hot topic. California leads the country in building codes which provide the best user experience and the lowest energy costs. The regulations in Title 24, Chapter 6 specify the roofing options that are available for new construction. One major innovation is the introduction of cool roofing. A cool roof is a roof which reflects sunlight and doesn’t retain as much heat as a conventional roof. Cool roofs are becoming a popular way to improve comfort and reduce energy costs. In the Pomona Valley area where both heat and energy costs are main concerns, cool roofs are especially important.  We at Royal Roof Company can answer your questions and help with your cool roofing needs in Pomona Valley, San Gabriel Valley, and surrounding areas. How does it work?

The main way cool roofs stay cool is by reflecting more sunlight than traditional roofs. For flat or sloped commercial roofing, this means reflective coatings and the application of reflective membranes. For steep-slope roofs, like most residential roofs, there are various shingle, tile, and metal roofing options which contain granules or pigments that reflect infrared sunlight.

Another way cool roofs work is by releasing absorbed heat back into the air, rather than into the interior of a building. Using using materials which give off heat quickly reduces the average temperature of the roof, and therefore reduces the amount of heat which will be absorbed into the building.

These two factors work together to keep the interior of buildings cooler. A cool roof can keep a roof 50–60°F (28–33°C) cooler than conventional roofing products during peak summer hours.

Why use a cool roof?

Cool roofs have a number of benefits. Cool roofing can help in the following ways:

  • Save on Energy Costs:  Cool roofs can save you money. By absorbing less heat, it means that your air conditioning doesn’t have to work as hard to keep your home or office cool. This is especially important in areas with high energy costs, such as the Pomona Valley. One California study found that the yearly net savings for a commercial cool roof is around $.50 per square foot.

  • Reduce Pollution:  Not only will needing less air conditioning save you money, you’ll also be doing your part for cleaner air. Less air conditioning means using less energy overall.

  • Be Healthier and More Comfortable:  The effects of a cool roof on a building without air conditioning can be dramatic. Not only will these buildings be more comfortable, they’ll also help keep down instances of heat exhaustion or other heat-related problems.

  • Increase the Life Expectancy of your Roof:  Heat is one of the most damaging things for your roof. By reducing the amount of heat your roof has to endure, you’re extending the potential life of your shingles.

How does Title 24 affect my roofing options in California?

As of August 2009, any new roofs or re-roofs need to meet the Title 24, Part 6 regulations for energy efficiency. These regulations apply to any steep-slope roofs, including residential and commercial applications. An easy way to meet those requirements is by installing a cool roof. Cool roofing shingle, tile, and metal roofing products are available in a variety of colors and styles.
